I picked this little marvel up about 4 weeks ago. To be honest I am still getting to grips with its capabilities but am simply stunned by its quality and power.  Sure it is easy to play and could be considered a toy with a brief encounter, but when you dig deeper its way more than that.

The dynamic phrase synthesizer moniker is not very descriptive of how the unit works, but I can’t think of anything that would, so I guess its a good choice. The Kaos part though is very apt, as you can really get some wild chaotic results.

To play the Kaossilator you use a touchpad. You can tap, hold, or slide, your fingers across the touch pad for some unique results. The touch pad allows you to use more than one finger and this can greatly enhance what sounds it makes. You can then layer loops you create, on top of each other, building up some amazing sounds and then jam to this.

The Kaossilator has 100 synth programs built in that include lead synths, bass synths, drums, and drum patterns as well as real instruments. These alone are amazing but the unit goes further and has 50 arpeggiator/gate patterns too. You can also choose from 31 different scales and adjust the key.

Its one of those things that is really simple to play with but is incredibly addictive, once you get started. I am using mine to add some kewl stuff to the music I’m making but this unit is also a weapon for people making live music, including DJs who might not pick up an instrument normally. Its just that easy to use. As long as you have rhythm, anyone can produce results that may surprisa lot of people including you.

I really love the synth and bass synths and have spent a lot of time playing with them. The SE (specila effects) are cool to. The drum patterns have also taken a lot of my time although I won’t be using them to record. Its good fun to loop a drum pattern and then play synth over the top. I am yet to more than briefly play with the arpeggiator/gate settings but have no doubt they will come in handy in the studio

Whether you are producing tunes in your bedroom/studio or playing live, or just want to play around amusing only yourself, I highly recommend the Kaossilator. I wish I knew how to describe how much fun and how addictive it is, but I guess you just need to get your hands on one to find out.
